For a graduating lawyer the Ying Yan is a symbol for balance in judgements. Ellinor Roosevelt said that "Justice must be justice for both." In a larger sense all life seems to be a balance, there is good and bad all about us.
Because I was working with flag iris when this painting became important I curved two iris blossoms to the shape of the Yin Yang.
The symbol we know as Yin Yang represents the ancient Chinese understanding of how things work. The outer circle represents "everything", while the dark and light shapes within the circle represent the interaction of two energies, called "yin" (black) and "yang" (white), which cause everything to happen. The shapes are not completely dark or light, just as things in life are not completely black or white.
